Promoting Success with Arab Immigrant Students Teacher Resources
This document was developed by Alberta teachers to assist classroom teachers and school administrators throughout Alberta to better understand the culture and needs of Arab immigrant students in their schools. This is the fourth resource in a series developed by the Canadian Multicultural Education Foundation (CMEF) in partnership with the Alberta Teachers’ Association. It is intended to promote the success of students from Arab immigrant families and strengthen school-community connections within the Arab community.

Creating a Compassionate Classroom
Creating a Compassionate Classroom is a reference booklet for teachers about the mental health needs of their students. The most important factor for success in dealing with a mental health issue is support—and teachers are an important part of their students’ support system. This booklet provides teachers with information on common mental health issues, tools to help identify students in need and resources to help teachers make referrals to mental health professionals.

Growth Planning Tools Available

September and October are growth planning season.

The Professional Development program area of the Alberta Teachers’ Association has new resources to help teachers and school leaders with the growth planning process. New self-reflection tools, sources of evidence and growth plan templates are now available on the Association’s website.

In addition, a new online professional self-reflection tool is available for teachers and school leaders. The tool is based on the Teaching Quality Standard or the Principal Quality Practice Guidelines. Each user will create a user name and password, and there will be no access to or mining of the data by others.

Workshop Explores Assessment

Assessment—Building the Bridge from Teaching to Learning

Assessment plays a critical role in the learning of our students. As teachers, we take on multiple roles during the assessment cycle, including planner, coach and judge. During this workshop, participants will explore three questions related to those roles:

  • How do we plan assessment with the end in mind?
  • How do we support the learner to successfully meet curricular outcomes?
  • How do we ensure the credibility of our judgments?

By engaging in a variety of activities, workshop participants will reflect on their assessment practices and consider how to use assessment effectively to support student learning. The workshop is available in English as either a full- or half-day session.

To book a professional development workshop, contact the Alberta Teachers’ Association’s Professional Development program area at Barnett House.
